Multiply your age by seven and call it a day — that's the dog years "rule" most people learn as kids. It's also wrong. Vets don't use it, and once you see how dogs actually age, you'll understand why.

The calculator above already converted your birth date using the same curve veterinarians use for real dogs: a fast, steep climb through puppyhood and adolescence, then a slower, steadier pace once maturity sets in. A 30-year-old human comes out to 164 dog years under this formula — nowhere near the 210 you'd get from the old 7x math, because real dogs cram most of their aging into the first couple of years.

Why the 7-to-1 rule is wrong

A one-year-old dog isn't a toddler — it's basically a teenager. Most breeds are sexually mature, close to full height, and already have a mouth full of adult teeth by their first birthday. Vets count that first year as 15 dog years of development, because so much growth happens in such a short window.

Year two adds another 9 years, bringing a 2-year-old dog to about 24 — roughly the age most humans finish maturing physically. After that, aging slows to a crawl by comparison: each additional year adds just 5 dog years. That's why a 10-year-old Labrador, who might seem "old" at ten human years in, is really only in late middle age by dog-years math — about 64.

The flat 7x rule misses all of this. It assumes a dog ages at a constant rate every single year, when in reality the curve is steep early and flat later — much closer to how humans actually age, just compressed into a shorter life.

How the calculator works

The calculator takes the birth date you enter, works out your exact age, and runs it through the same veterinary-style formula vets use for dogs: the first year of life counts as 15 dog years, the second year adds 9 more, and every year after that adds 5. So the math for a 30-year-old is 15 + 9 + (28 × 5) = 164.

This produces one number for an "average" dog — it doesn't adjust for breed size, even though real dogs vary a lot. Large breeds mature fast but have shorter lifespans overall; small breeds mature a bit more slowly but often live into their high teens. It's more biologically grounded than the 15+9+5 rule but was validated on one breed, so it isn't used for this site's general calculator.
